Maestro Andreas Delfs opened his inaugural season as Music Director of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra on September 23-25 with rousing performances by Brahms, Wagner and Higdon.
The return of Maestro Andreas Delfs October 21 and 23 lead the RPO in Kurt weill‘s Suite from The Threepenny Opera, which showcases the influence of American jazz in 1920s Europe and features instrumentation including banjo, bandoneon and a set of traps. The program continues Sergei RachmaninoffRhapsody on a Paganini Theme with Pianist Natasha Paremski; Boris Blacher’sa ?? Orchestral variations on a theme by Paganini; and the Aram Khachaturian Suite of ?? Spartacus, one of the composer’s best-known works.
At November 4 and 6, the orchestra welcomes the guest conductor Joseph Young, one of today’s most gifted young conductors, on his RPO debut. Maestro Young is Music Director of the Berkeley Symphony, Artistic Director of the Peabody Conservatory Ensembles, and Resident Conductor of the National Youth Orchestra-USA at Carnegie Hall. All-American program opens with native Onward by Alabama Brian Nabors, whose music is often inspired by Jazz, Funk, R&B and Gospel. The composer describes this work as a ten-minute soundscape to “celebrate the dreams and aspirations that motivate us to be the best of ourselves”. Next on the program is Barber’s Violin Concerto, with the soloist Guillaume Hagen, which is making its RPO debut. The evening ends with the much-loved “New World” symphony by Dvořák.
Maestro Delfs returns this year to conduct RPO’s annual opera presentation, a semi-staged production of Humperdinck’s family classic Hansel and Gretel, sung in English, on November 18 and 20.
The Pops RPO series
The 2021-22 Pops Series, edited by the Senior Pops Conductor Jeff Tyzik (celebrating its 28th season with the orchestra), presents bright and beloved popular music including Motown music with Kings of Soul, a concert dedicated to the best of Broadway and a celebration of the 90th anniversary of the great John williams. Several highly anticipated programs that were due to be canceled in 20-21 have been rescheduled for 21-22, including Revolution: Music of the Beatles (April 22 and 23, 2022), arranged by Jeff Tyzik; and the music of two of the biggest film franchises in history with Jurassic Park in concert (January 21 and 22, 2022) and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (May 27 and 28, 2022).
