Freeport Concert Band launches music under the stars

The Freeport Concert Band will launch its Music Under the Stars 2021 summer concert series on Sunday at the historic Koenig Bandshell in Krape Park in Freeport.

The name of this Sunday’s show is “Welcome to the Unknown”. Renee Schultz of Lena-Winslow High School will serve as the conductor. The concert sponsor is Jewell Financial Services – Angela Damin.

The Freeport Concert Band began performing in 1919, giving concerts downtown, alternating between Taylor and Krape Parks on Sunday evenings.

The group has seen many conductors including Robert Gibler, Charles Wilcox, Karl Kubitz, William Rubbendall, Ernie Seeman, Joe Doolittle and Ed Hargrove, who coined the name Music Under the Stars.

Today, conductors and musicians come from communities in northern Illinois. The shows also feature guest singers and soloists from the Freeport area.

The performances are free. All shows start at 7 p.m.

The Freeport Concert Band corporate concert sponsors for the 2021 season are the Freeport Park District and Big Radio. Each concert also has its own sponsor.

June 20

7 p.m. at the Koenig Bandshell in Krape Park 1799 S. Park Blvd., Freeport. The conductor will be Bill Petersen of Freeport. The concert sponsor will be FHN.

June 27

7 p.m. at the Koenig Bandshell in Krape Park 1799 S. Park Blvd., Freeport. The conductor will be Nicky Arn from Freeport. The concert sponsor will be US Bank and Furst-McNess Company.

4th July

7 p.m. at the Koenig Bandshell in Krape Park 1799 S. Park Blvd., Freeport. The conductor of the Patriotic July 4th concert will be Scott Stich of Highland Community College. The concert sponsor will be Battery G and Second Illinois Light Artillery.

11 July

7 p.m. at the Koenig Bandshell in Krape Park 1799 S. Park Blvd., Freeport. The conductor will be Travis Cunningham of Forreston. The concert sponsor will be the State Bank and Civil Division, Helm Group.

July 18

7 p.m. at the Koenig Bandshell in Krape Park 1799 S. Park Blvd., Freeport. The concert conductor will be Tom Huber, retired, of Byron. The concert sponsor will be Tri Star Metals.

July 25

7 p.m. at the Koenig Bandshell in Krape Park 1799 S. Park Blvd., Freeport. The concert conductor will be Bill Petersen, director of the Early Jazz Society. The concert sponsor will be Liberty Village.
