ELIDA – The Lima Area Concert Band (LACB) will make a triumphant return this weekend, finally having the opportunity to celebrate 50 years of music. The 50th anniversary celebration was supposed to take place last year, but shows have been canceled across the board due to the pandemic.
Now the group is reforming and opening their comeback tour with a special show on Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Elida High School. The show was originally intended for the Civic Center in downtown Lima, but damage to the stage resulted in a change of venue.
Composer James Swearengin will be a central part of the show, as he has not only been tasked with writing the music for the show, but will also join the group as guest composer on Saturday. He wrote over 600 works throughout his career and has roots in Ohio, earning degrees from Bowling Green and Ohio State. He has devoted much of his career to imparting his musical knowledge through high school education and conducting.
âI was very touched and delighted when the band asked me to write this piece for them. It was a wonderful opportunity to write for a very wonderful group of musicians whose reputation speaks for itself, âsaid Swearengin. “I have certainly known this group from Lima for several years during my time in Ohio, so when they asked me if I would write this order, I was more than willing to try and fulfill that obligation.”
LACB President and Trumpeter Chad Higgins explained what makes Swearengin and his upcoming performance with the band so special.
âHe is a very famous composer from Ohio. Everyone who’s been in the band here knows his name, âHiggins said.
After more than a year of waiting, LACB members will finally be able to launch the song that was written just for them on Saturday.
âIt will be something really special for us,â Higgins said. âWe wanted him to come up with some sort of song that was basically a celebration song for our 50th birthday, and he certainly did. It’s a really cool song, the whole band really like it.
Tickets are still available for $ 15 at the Civic Center box office, at Von’s Jewelry, and online at the group’s website. Admission for students of all ages is free.
