Local Musicians Invited to Join Saint Mary’s Concert Band | Culture & Leisure

Experienced local instrumentalists are invited to join the Saint Mary’s University Band this fall. The first rehearsal of this season will be on Monday, August 29 at 6:45 p.m. at Saint Yon’s Hall, Rehearsal Room 158, on the Winona campus of Saint Mary’s University (SMU).

The Concert Band has been a college-community partnership since 1990 and is led by Dr. Janet Heukeshoven, professor of music and music education. The group rehearses from 6:45 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays during classes, from late August to April.

Talented high school musicians and experienced adult players from the community are invited to join college instrumentalists for an exciting season of great music. Trumpet and percussion players are particularly in demand this year, but all experienced wind, brass and percussion players are welcome to join the SMU Concert Band.

Chair placement auditions will take place after the first two rehearsals on August 29 and 31. These are short, individually programmed and are based on the band’s repertoire and scales; details will be provided at the first rehearsal.

The group performs twice during the 2022-2023 academic year. On Sunday, December 11, 2022, the band will take part in the annual Christmas Afternoon Concert at the Page Theatre. On Sunday, April 16, 2023, at 3:00 p.m., the concert features the “Suite Holst en Eb”, a new composition commissioned as part of the Kaplan Foundation’s commissioning project (with composer Benjamin Dean Taylor), as well as a duet piccolo and euphonium performed by Janet and Eric Heukeshoven, conducted by alumnus Dr. Lynn Albee. The SMU Jazz Ensemble (directed by Eric Heukeshoven) presents the first half of the concert. Alumni of both ensembles are especially invited to attend and participate in this retirement celebration with Eric and Janet Heukeshoven.

Please contact Dr. Janet Heukeshoven at 507-457-1675 or [email protected], if you are interested in performing with the orchestra this year and/or for more information regarding spring concert plans. Please include the instrument you play and your contact details.
