The Taupō Concert Band performs an evening concert on September 30.

The concert will feature a number of musicians performing solos and will also give the entire band plenty of leeway to play as an ensemble.

The concert program was composed by conductor Matt West.

The full band will perform “Oregon”, by Jacob de Haan, an evocative soundscape taking the audience on an adventure through the landscapes of the Northwestern United States. Similar to a movie theme, listeners will recognize cowboys, Indians, gold diggers, wagons and steam trains as various melodies develop, cycle through and then reappear.

Also American-flavored is a medley of highlights from the musical “Chicago” and an arrangement of “The Sound of Silence” by Simon and Garfunkel.

Featured soloists are Richard Paull on trumpet, playing the third movement of Haydn’s “Concerto for Trumpet in E-flat” by Haydn, Peter Marshall on clarinet, playing “Viktor’s Tale”, and the composition of the Oriental-themed soundtrack by John Williams for Steven Spielberg’s film “The Terminal”, and Joseph Craggs on clarinet with Henry Mancini’s playful piece “Pie in the Face Polka”.
