Orillia Concert Band Names Randy Hoover Musical Director

The Orillia Concert Band looks forward to entertaining audiences in Orillia and area under the “inspired and experienced leadership” of Hoover

The Orillia Concert Band (OCB) is pleased to announce that Randy Hoover has been named the band’s new musical director.

If you saw one of OCB’s two Christmas gigs in December, you had the opportunity to see Hoover lead the band as he replaced James Hilts who was on leave.

Hilts, unfortunately, had to extend his leave indefinitely and subsequently, when approached, Hoover agreed (in consultation with his wife, Heidi) to take on the role of full-time OCB Music Director. His appointment was confirmed by the group on Monday evening during the OCB’s annual general meeting.

Randy Hoover has been a contributor to the Orillia music community for many years.

He holds a Bachelor of Music and a Bachelor of Education from the University of Western Ontario and a Master of Education from St. Mary’s University. He holds an Associate’s Degree from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Trumpet Performance.

Hoover taught music at high schools in Nova Scotia, Shelburne and Orangeville; and has led several concert and jazz bands at music festivals, including Boston, Quebec, Winnipeg and Austria.

Locally, Hoover has played trumpet in the Orillia Concert Band, cornet principal in the Orillia Silver Band, trumpet in the Sensations Rhythm and Blues Band, and trumpet with the Mariposa Arts Theatre.

He is the founder of the Leacock Brass Quintet and led the Orillia Silver Junior Band. He also continues to perform in religious and community functions. He is the founder of the Jazz Standards Trio and is also the musical director of the Little Big Band of Orillia.

Hoover looks forward to assuming full-time leadership of the Orillia Concert Band and would like to thank the OCB for providing him with this opportunity.

The Orillia Concert Band has been blessed with outstanding musical directors since its formation by Stan Passfield in 1986: Bob Plunkett; Roy Menagh; James Hilts; and now Randy Hoover.

Congratulations Randy on your nomination. The Orillia Concert Band looks forward to entertaining audiences in Orillia and area under your inspired and experienced leadership.

Information about the Orillia Concert Band and upcoming concerts is available on the OCB website. Website and Facebook page.
