She has performed on the most prestigious opera stages in the world. She also appeared in “Sesame Street”. She recorded Mozart arias and Death Cab songs for Cutie. She has performed at Buckingham Palace and the Super Bowl. She starred in a Broadway show (probably the only real flop of her career) and she even sang on the soundtrack of “The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King”.
It is this range of works, from the popular to the esoteric, that has earned Renee Fleming the title of “People’s Diva”.
Fleming will be back in Sarasota on Tuesday for a concert at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall. It comes almost exactly a year after his debut in Sarasota. She performed in concert at Van Wezel last January and also participated in the annual Sarasota Orchestra gala. She would have been eager to perform in Sarasota because the orchestra is conducted by a female conductor, Anu Tali.
She has the kind of voice that can delight an opera purist – she is widely regarded as one of the greatest sopranos who ever lived – but she is an excellent performer in pop and jazz music. According to Van Wezel’s publicity material, his local concert will feature “classic songs, opera arias and popular selections from musicals.”
