Research found that buskers are likely to make more money if they play classical music on a busy Sunday when it is cold in the air.
Evidence collected by a Dutch university has shown that, compared to rock music, the audience is more generous when classical music is played.
For three months, researchers at Tilburg University studied 72 musicians playing the streets of Cologne to find out what made them the most money and recorded responses from more than 80,000 passers-by.
A busker in Cologne earns an average of € 23 per hour. But if he trades his jazz, pop or rock repertoire for classical, his hourly income climbs to € 27 per hour.

If the quality of the service is superior, the musician earns on average 28 € per hour. People in a group are more likely to donate because they want to impress their friends with their generosity, especially when it is cold.

Sunday is the most lucrative day with an average hourly wage of € 36. The day of rest has religious implications and is more likely to “amplify feelings like empathy and lead to more giving.”
The researchers conclude that their study could influence the way fundraising companies and other types of street performers market their performances.
“Artists could benefit from an active influence on the size of the crowd around them, perhaps by bringing fans and friends to their performances or by advertising to inform fans of their performances,” he added. they.
