suspended during the third wave, classical music conferences will come back to life | Kolkata News

Calcutta: Classical music conferences that were postponed following the third wave are slowly getting back on track. New conference dates for Dover Lane Music Conference, Uttarapara Sangeet Chakra and Behala Sanskriti Sammilani have been announced.
Keeping in mind all the Covid-19 health protocol, Pt Amiya Ranjan Bandyopadhyay, 96, will perform at the Sangeet Piyasi Festival to be held from February 11-13. The descendant of the Bishnupur gharana is the oldest Indian classical performer in the country.
Bandyopadhyay’s birthday, which is February 21, will be celebrated at the festival after his vocal recital on February 13. Sons of musicians who have succumbed to Covid-19 are also performing. This includes Pt Subhankar Banerjee’s son, Aarchik, Pt Anandagopal’s son Bandyopadhyay, Prangopal, Pt Debu Choudhary’s grandson, Adhiraaj Choudhury and Pt Sarathi Chatterjee’s son, Saptak, said Pt Samar Saha about its Sangeet Piyasi festival.
The 70th Dover Lane Music Conference was due to be held from January 22-25. But the program was canceled due to rising Covid numbers. Dover Lane Music Conference general secretary Avijit Majumder told TOI that the festival will now be held from April 14-17. “The same programming and even the same sequence of programs will remain. As it will be quite warm by then, we would like to opt for night programs. I hope the night curfew will be lifted by then,” Majumder said. This year’s festival will have artists like violin maestro L Subramaniam performing. Apart from that, there will be recitals by Parween Sultana, Ustad Shujaat Hussain Khan, Ustad Rashid Khan, Pt Viswa Mohan Bhatt, Vidushi Ashwini Bhide-Deshpande, Amaan Ali Bangash, Rahul Sharma, Armaan Khan among others.
Incidentally, the Uttarpara Sangeet Chakra conference has also chosen the same dates for its next festival. This year, its conference was originally scheduled to be held between January 22 and 25. “We had originally canceled all concerts all night and only opted for evening performances. Then we postponed our festival,” said Anish Mukhopadhyay, co-secretary of Uttarpara Sangeet Chakra.
The 10th Behala Sanskriti Sammilani, which was to be held from January 9-12, will now be held from March 19-22. Pt Hariprasad Chaurasia, Ustad Shahid Parvez, Pt Ronu Mazumdar, Pt Ajoy Chakraborty, Pt Tarun Bhattacharya, Pt Tejendra Narayan Majumdar. Pt Viswa Mohan Bhatt, Vidushi Kaushiki Chakraborty, Pt Samar Saha, Pt Abhijit Bandopadhyay, Pt Bickram Ghosh, Pt Subhen Chatterjee, Pt Yogesh Samshi and Ojas Adhiya will perform here. “We are trying to get the organizers of some important classical music festivals from India and Bangladesh to inaugurate our festival,” General Secretary Sandipan Banerjee said.
